History

Skardu has a rich and fascinating history. In ancient times, it was an important trade route connecting South Asia with Central Asia and Tibet. The region was initially influenced by Buddhism, which is still evident from old rock carvings and historical remains. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, Islam spread to the area and gradually became the dominant religion. Skardu also served as the capital of the Baltistan region, where local rulers (rajas) governed. In the 19th century, it came under Dogra rule, and after the events of 1947–48, it became part of Pakistan. Today, Skardu is well known for its unique culture, historical significance, and stunning mountain landscapes.
