Kachura Lake (Shangrila Lake)
Latitude: 35.42680000 Longitude: 75.45520000
Location
Kachura Lake, commonly known as Shangrila Lake, is located in the Skardu District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The lake lies near Lower Kachura village, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Skardu city, along the Skardu–Khaplu Road. Surrounded by steep mountains, lush greenery, and crystal-clear waters, it is one of the most photographed destinations in Baltistan.
Background
& History
Kachura Lake gained international fame in the 1980s
after the establishment of Shangrila Resort, also known as “Heaven
on Earth.” The resort was built by Brigadier (R) Muhammad Aslam Khan,
inspired by James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon. A decommissioned
aircraft placed near the lake became an iconic symbol of the resort and helped
popularize the area as a premier tourist attraction in northern Pakistan.
While the lake itself has long been part of local
Balti life, its development as a tourist destination transformed it into one of
Skardu’s most recognizable landmarks.
