History
LAND OF TOURISM
Ghanche District, the easternmost
part of Baltistan, shares borders with Ladakh and lies close to the Line of
Control with India. Historically, it was an integral part of Baltistan,
governed by local Balti chieftains and under the influence of the Maqpon
dynasty of Skardu. Its position along trade routes to Ladakh and Tibet made it
a hub for commerce and cultural exchange. In the 19th century, following the
Dogra conquest of Baltistan, Ghanche became part of the princely state of Jammu
and Kashmir under British oversight. After the events of 1947 and the
subsequent division of the region, Ghanche came under Pakistani administration
as part of Baltistan. The district is characterized by its rugged mountainous
terrain, high-altitude villages, and a vibrant cultural heritage, reflected in
traditional Balti customs, architecture, and local festivals.
