LAND OF FORTS

The name Kharmang belongs to Balti language which is comprised of two words, Khar means "Fort" and Mang means "abundant". So, Kharmang means the valley of Forts. The name was given to the valley during the era of Ali Sher Khan Anchan who built many forts in the area because of its geographical importance. The old name of this valley was Khartikhsha.

Kharmang District lies in the Kharmang Valley, which forms a part of the greater Indus Valley region. In earlier times, it was under the rule of the Maqpon dynasty of Skardu, until the Dogras took control in 1840. When the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was created under British oversight in 1846, Kharmang was initially included in Skardu tehsil within Ladakh Wazarat. In 1901, it became part of the newly established Kargil tehsil. After the 1947 Gilgit Rebellion, Kharmang, along with the rest of Baltistan, joined Pakistan. It remained a subdivision of Skardu District until 2015, when it was elevated to the status of a separate district.
